Association of inadequate feed intake during lactation with removal of sows from the breeding herd
نویسنده
چکیده
Results: Higher average daily lactation feed intake, greater litter weight, and greater backfat thickness at weaning were associated with less likelihood of removal of sows from the herd before the subsequent parity. Sows consuming ≤ 3.5 kg of feed per day during the fi rst 2 weeks of lactation were more likely to be removed from the herd before the next parity. Implications: Measures to ensure adequate feed intake from the start of lactation may minimize sow removals from breeding herds. Under the conditions of this study, a sow consuming no feed on a single day during the fi rst 2 weeks of lactation has the highest odds of removal from the herd.

متن کاملThe Influence of Nutrition on the Reproductive Efficiency of Young Sows
The nutrition of gilts and first-litter sows is discussed in relation to recent research findings. Preliminary data from commercial piggeries suggest that gilts which enter the breeding herd with low fat reserves subsequently have a lower reproductive efficiency . The results of three experiments indicated that first-litter sows required a different feeding strategy during lactation compared to...
متن کاملSow factors affecting voluntary feed intake during lactation
Genetic and environmental changes during the last few decades have resulted in higher milk production and maintenance costs of lactating sows, leading to increased energy requirements, whereas the amount of body fat reserves of, in particular, young immature sows have decreased and voluntary feed intake may have decreased. As a consequence, present voluntary feed intake of sows during lactation...

Data recording was performed on the Hohenschulen research farm of the In...
متن کاملLactating Swine Nutrient Recommendations
Many factors influence sow productive efficiency and sow herd profitability, but inadequate feeding programs for the sow are major contributors to problems with high sow attrition and poor productivity. The primary challenge of feeding highly productive sows involves minimizing the negative nutrient (energy and protein) balance during lactation in order to minimize short-term and long-term repr...
